FAQs

Can I have online or telephone counselling instead of face to face?

Yes, we will ask your preference at the time of contacting us.

In the past it was the norm to see clients face to face but since the pandemic we appreciate this is not always possible. We have undertaken additional training to ensure working remotely will be offered at the same standard.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes long. We will bring sessions to a close 10 minutes before the end to check in with you so that you feel better prepared on your onward journey following your session. We will use this space to look at your next session too and to complete any payment balances if not already done so.

What happens during my first session?

Prior to your first session your counsellor will have been in touch with you to arrange a date and time to meet each other.

The initial session is an ideal time for you and your counsellor to get to know each other and gain a sense of how you might proceed together.

Your first session will feel different from future appointments as your counsellor will discuss their counselling framework with you. The framework provides a secure and confidential agreement between you and your counsellor, this will include issues of confidentiality, length and timings of sessions.

If you are unclear or have any questions you can raise them at any point. You will be supplied with your own copy of the agreement and sign one for the counsellor to keep.

What facilities do you have?

Our therapy room is easily accessible on the second floor of the building and a lift is available. Toilets are available on each floor and a designated kitchen area is available should you wish to make yourself comfortable before your session.

There is a free on-site car park with easy access to the building. Please note this is a non smoking area.

How many sessions will I need?

How often you see your counsellor and how many appointments you have will depend on your individual circumstances, and will be agreed together.

However, as a guide, we often suggest an initial block of six sessions, typically once a week. We will have regular reviews to check in.

We do not place limits on the number of sessions offered.  Rather, we suggest they continue until you or we feel that you no longer require further sessions. It is generally best to plan an ending session with your counsellor.

When do I pay?

You may pay in advance of your session or at the beginning of your session. Payments can be accepted by bank transfer or by a card reader on the day.

Where should I go when inside the building?

Should you decide to join our services we will ask you to wait in either of the two designated waiting areas, please wait there, we will come to meet you from there.

What happens once I fill in the contact form?

Once we receive your details we will contact you as soon as possible to discuss availability, should you have a counsellor preference just let us know. We will do our best to match your needs.

Can I request to see an individual counsellor?

You can request to see a particular therapist and we will endeavour to match this wherever is possible.

How might counselling make me feel?

You may feel worse before you start to feel better during the counselling journey. This is because difficult situations and emotions can be brought to the surface. It can be normal to experience mixed emotions or feelings towards your counsellor. Please do raise any worries or concerns you have should you be aware of them, this can often be helpful and a natural process.
